The person who discovered the recent flaw in Chrome, or at least who informed the public of this error, was the security company Imperva. The problem in question was called “SymStealer”, and was associated with the way the browser handled symbolic links. Such links were received by the browser and did not go through the validation of the possibility of accessing the pages they directed.
By not going through such verification, a possibility was opened for the hackers access parts of the operating system that would normally be blocked. This happened because, when a set of files was received on some website or form, if there was a symbolic link, it was followed without the mentioned validation.
That way, if a person had bad intentions, it was possible to take the user to a fake website and download any file, and when this was loaded with a symbolic link present, the attacker would have access to areas that normally he would not be able to view or even to alter.
It is important to note that this error did not appear only in Google Chrome, since the fault was in the system Chromium, which is used as the base of the browser, but was later taken to Microsoft Edge and beyond browsers. Despite all this, the error has already been resolved and is no longer present in the browser.
