What is wind energy?

Also called wind energy, the wind energy it is the kinetic energy contained in the masses of air, wind, which is able to be harnessed and used in the generation of electrical energy, through the electromagnetic induction, and for mechanical work such as water pumping and grain crushing. The process for harnessing wind energy depends on wind turbines, which are the equipment used to, from contact with the wind, rotate and generate other forms of energy, such as electrical energy by example.

Wind energy has shown encouraging results regarding its potential for generating electricity, in the first half of 2015 wind power plants Brazilian companies increased their energy production by 114%, and the electricity produced from wind corresponds to 3% of all energy produced in the System National Integrated (SIN), which is the set of companies responsible for the production of electricity throughout the country - less than 2% of all generated energy is outside the SIN.

Brazil has wind power plants in some states, such as Rio Grande do Norte, Bahia and Ceará; currently, the wind power plant in Rio Grande do Norte leads the production of electricity, operating with a capacity of 2,243 MW.

There are positive and negative aspects to the use of wind energy to generate electricity.

As positive aspects we can mention:

  • does not emit pollutants into the atmosphere;

  • it is a cheap energy source (this becomes evident when we compare the structure of a hydroelectric plant with that of a wind plant);

  • As it is inexhaustible, it is therefore a renewable energy.

As negative points we have:

  • noise and visual pollution produced by wind turbines;

  • the irregularity of the winds can compromise the generation of electric energy;

  • for some reason that is still unknown, the presence of wind turbines modifies the birds' migration habits, in addition to the problem of collisions between these animals and the generator blades.
