Do you have a voice in your head? Know that you are not alone!
For a long time, scientists believed that it was impossible to maintain this “internal monologue” with oneself. However, recent studies have shown that this is more common than you might think.
And the explanation for this does not involve any neurological damage or disorder. psychiatric. There is no reason to be alarmed. According to researchers, this is just one of the many ways that people process thoughts or feelings.
And this is not just an adult thing, no! Recent studies suggest that 18- to 21-year-olds already begin “internal conversation” before projecting speech.
“I am dependent on you”
A study by the University of Nevada (USA), carried out in 1990, looked into how dependent we are on the voice in our head. Research volunteers were provided with a beeper and asked to always write down what they were thinking at the time the device rang.
When they went to review the results, the researchers noticed that some people just had internal monologues every time the beep went off. They likened the feeling to having a radio inside your head.
However, another group of people had almost no conversations with themselves, some less than usual.
Those who had sweet silence in their heads, instead of speaking, described some images or sensations. These people, at some point, were also associated with the condition of aphantasia – when someone cannot or has great difficulty imagining or visualizing images in the mind.
Thought that goes far
As pointed out by the CNRS Psychology and Neurocognition Laboratory, the voice in the head has three dimensions. The first is dialogality, which is why the conversations are so deep and complex at times.
Then we have condensation. Here, the scientists measured how “verborrhagic” the monologue is – that is, if you talk too much without getting anywhere.
The third and final dimension of our inner voice is intentionality. It's when you talk to yourself on purpose or by chance.
What are the three dimensions of the voice in your head like? I bet you'll answer by talking to her!
