There are some dog breeds considered perfect for people…

If you are a person who has difficulty dealing with flaws and defects, you are probably an extremely perfectionist person. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to this and be very careful, after all, this personality trait is often linked to suicidal thoughts, says research.

For perfectionist people, suffering is very present in their lives, since they cannot deal with the the fact that nobody is perfect and they are always facing the flaws that are part of the world in which we live.

When someone is a perfectionist, perfectionism is usually with others and with themselves, making people perfectionists extremely self-critical and, therefore, are always in a failed attempt to meet their own standards and those of others to be someone perfect.

Perfectionism can be harmful and an extremely vicious cycle

Being a perfectionist to some extent can even be beneficial, however, when this crosses the line, being perfect becomes an obsession and a vicious cycle of self-criticism becomes part of the person's life.

In some professions, for example, mistakes are not tolerable and, in these cases, they end up having more suicide risks, such as lawyers, architects and doctors.

Martin Smith, leader of the research, says:

“We tend to think of perfectionism as potentially a good thing.
We are told: 'Aim high, reach for the stars'.

But for some people, even excellence isn't good enough, and that's where they run into trouble. Insisting on perfection is simply not mentally healthy, adaptable or advisable.”

Perfectionism is not the cause, but it is related

People with a high level of perfectionism are unlikely to ask for help, as that would be admitting failure. With that, these people end up sinking much more easily.

“At this point, we cannot say that perfectionism is a cause of suicide. But we can say that the two correlate closely. The desire to be perfect – whether from internal or external pressure to succeed without ever failing – can be an unbearable, unsustainable strain,” concludes Smith.
