Conscious use of plastic is still a major challenge. Taking about 450 years to decompose in nature, this material is one of the main responsible for the accumulation of garbage in the environment. With that, it became necessary for companies that seek to position themselves in a more ecological way in the market to rethink about it.
Then, McDonald’s had its plastic reduction initiative, which started in the UK and has spread to all its locations. Find out more about how this initiative works here.

End of plastic at McDonald's
After spreading biodegradable paper straws across several countries, McDonald's seeks to go further in its ecological initiatives. With this, even the cutlery will no longer be plastic.
Responsible for about 20 million tons of plastic in the environment annually, restaurants like McDonald's are among the main causes that contribute to the pollution of the environment. Therefore, the restaurant intends to transform all its cutlery and packaging into recyclable and compostable paper materials by 2024. In addition, the company also intends to get rid of plastic furniture in its units and replace them with recyclable materials, thus becoming as ecological as possible.
Since starting this more sustainable initiative, McDonald's estimates that it has reduced the plastic content of each unit by around 40%, and the results are only going to improve. After all, in addition to guaranteeing the exchange for biodegradable items, the company has also committed itself to ensuring that its suppliers have sustainable processes.
Why eliminating plastic is the best solution?
Many people believe that recycling is enough, however this is not true. By recycling a plastic, you would only be postponing its disposal, and this product would still take years to decompose in the same way. Therefore, the best solution for conscious consumption is to reduce the use of this material as much as possible.
In this way, companies like McDonald's, which are looking for more sustainable solutions and reduced impact on the greenhouse effect, need to eliminate plastic as much as possible. After all, this is the only way to achieve the company's goal of reducing its emission of polluting gases by up to 31%.
Although the significant elimination of plastic is not yet a reality in all units in the world, McDonald's intends to make all its toys more sustainable by the year 2025, which within the planning would reduce by 90% the fossil fuel level of its Mc Lanche Feliz toys, if compared to 2018 levels.
