O substantive derivative is the one that originates from another word, usually by the radical. The derivation can be prefixal, suffixal, parasynthetic, regressive, or improper, depending on how it alters the primitive noun to create the derivative.

What is a derivative noun?
The derivative noun is a noun classification. It's called derivative because its name originated from another noun, that is, derives from another name. The derived noun often arises from the stem of another word. The derived noun can come from a primitive noun or even from another derived noun, that is, you can create a derived noun based on another derived noun.

THE derivation it can occur in different ways depending on how it alters the word from which the derived noun originated.
- Prefix Derivation: occurs by adding a prefix.
E.g.: sound → ultrassound
- Suffix Derivation: occurs by adding a suffix.
E.g.: clothing → clothinggem
- Parasynthetic Derivation: occurs by adding a prefix and from one suffix.
E.g.: loop → enlacquerment (in + bow + chin)
- Regressive derivation: occurs by reduction of a primitive word.
E.g.: singing → corner(“His singing is very in tune.”)
- Improper derivation: there is no change in the form of the word, but there is change semantics, that is, from the primitive word the derived word is created, which, despite having the same form, has a new meaning.
E.g.: to know (verb) → know(noun) ("Strength never overcomes knowledge.")
Derivative Noun Uses
Many words we use in everyday life are derived nouns without us noticing. Watch:
- "I still don't know how to use this application.”
- "You masonsknow this very well ground.”
- "Tried to set up a mousetrapto catch the rats.”
- "That one floriculturehas a wide variety of flowers.”
- "O anticlimaxof the story was amazing.”
Difference between derived noun and common noun
O common noun is any noun of generic name to a group of things or beings, not identifying the individuals of that group.
