How did the discovery of gold coins occur?
The family who live in Ellerby, North Yorkshire, were renovating their kitchen in July 2019 when they discovered a kind of glass made of clay with salt glaze that was buried under the floorboards and concrete of his house. House. This item was described as being an object the size of a soda can.
Inside, they found more than 260 gold coins dating from 1610 to 1727. The value of these pieces is also very high, especially due to their origin, period and condition.
The importance and origin of these coins
Renowned auction house Spike and Son, based in London, revealed the discovery in a press release. Those were one of the largest 18th century English gold coins ever discovered in Britain.
Gregory Edmund, an auctioneer for Spink & Son, said the prized treasure is unlike any discovery in British archeology and that the event will surpass any coin auction in living memory. He adds that it's a wonderful find and that it was genuinely unexpected.
The coins probably belonged to a wealthy family known as the Fernley-Maisters, who were very influential from the late 16th century until the 18th century. That family line shrank immediately after the couple's death. That's probably why the money was never found.
