Diabetes: why we need to be aware?
Diabetes is well known for being a treacherous disease, mainly because it is silent. Approximately 12.5 million Brazilians have the disease, making it the third leading cause of death in the country.
Much of this gravity happens because, precisely, half of the diabetic population does not know that they have the disease. Given this, it is very important to be aware of the slightest changes that occur in the body, to identify this disease as soon as possible. See what they are:
- Very thirsty and excessive urge to urinate
Due to the disease, sugar ends up not being absorbed properly by the cells. As a result, it accumulates in the bloodstream. However, this excess still needs to be expelled by the body. Thus, the kidneys are triggered frequently, causing the patient to urinate a lot, becoming dehydrated and very thirsty.
- Blurred vision
Another problem generated by excess blood sugar is the swelling of the crystalline lens (the lens of the eyes), which ends up changing its shape and flexibility. This change decreases the ability to focus, leaving the vision blurry.
- Fatigue
High blood sugar levels also make the patient tired more quickly than normal, in some cases causing chronic headaches. Therefore, they are symptoms that need attention.
- Hunger
The sugar from food, which should provide us with energy, ends up not being used properly by the cells due to the disease, which makes the patient feel more hungry.
