Disney+ creator says open TV has its days numbered; understand why

Bob Iger, the former CEO of Disney who was also the creator of the streaming service called Disney+, thinks that not every streaming service streaming will survive in the highly competitive market, however he said that the loser in this war will be traditional TV itself. See why.

He also offered his comments at a conference called Vox Media Code. Iger also addressed – in a lecture that ended up being a lot to talk about – some changes that cinema will possibly be going through in the coming years.

Streams that hold steady

After carrying out an analysis of the services being offered today, he assessed that Netflix has the tendency to remain strong, even having recently faced some problems involving the loss of subscribers.

“I believe Netflix will continue to thrive. They have some problems now, but the service is not going away”, he said, who also gave a slight reinforcement about your belief in the success of Disney+, especially given the commercial strength that franchises gather.

Compared to other competitors, Iger said he is amazed at the speed at which Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video are growing. Even so, he admitted that the two companies already had the resources and technologies to be able to guarantee this advance. Furthermore, according to the former president of Disney, these streams: “It is not their primary business and they are measured, probably, by different standards in terms of results, and serve other purposes in these companies."

And he continued: “They will hold. They will continue to grow and they will grow well. They have deep pockets. They have great access to consumers. They have strong technology platforms. They have proven that they know how to do this. So they stay.”

Some services are in the spotlight

Those who apparently run a certain risk are the services with the lowest number of subscribers, such as HBO Max, Paramount + and Peacock. The last one has not yet arrived in Brazil. Iger was also very polite in not mentioning any of the companies, meaning he didn't name them directly, but he made it clear: "I don't think all of them are going to make it."

Even with all that, the future of streaming video is brighter than that of TV.

"Linear TV and satellite are marching towards a great precipice and will be pushed," Iger said. It is worth remembering that the American channel ABC passed under his supervision for a long time. Now he predicts a painful world for conventional broadcasts. “I can't say when, but it will go away.”
