Researchers from several US institutions joined their colleagues from France and Guatemala for a new discovery. They found a population 2,000-year-old Maya in northern Guatemala. In the publication in the journal Ancient Mesoamerica, the group describes how they carried out the survey to arrive at the fascinating discovery.

The researchers made use of LiDAR, which is similar to a detection system, like a radar that makes use of a laser. This laser is able to penetrate vegetation in great depth, revealing what is below the ground.

During the new mapping, the researchers flew over Guatemala to reinforce the search. At this stage, they discovered and described that there was a great Mayan civilization in the place.
In studying the maps, the researchers observed that there were just over a thousand settlements in about 1046.07 square meters and that most were connected to different roads. In these settlements, the researchers could observe that the places had a very large population.
They observed that there were sidewalks, similar to roadbeds, which had 177 kilometers of paths that could be followed, making it possible for a civilization to visit other places.
In research, scholars found evidence of the existence of large pyramids in some of these settlements, as well as large platforms. As experts suggested, some of these places were used to carry out politics, work and leisure. These open spaces also had courts to play ball. Recent research has shown that these were useful courts for people in the area to play sports.
