Pandemic and restrictions
The International Organizing Committee (IOC) had to make some changes and impose restrictions so that the holding of the Olympic Games was possible during the pandemic.
- Public
For the maintenance of the games in 2021, the committee vetoed the participation of spectators from abroad. That is why, Brazilians living in Brazil cannot buy tickets and follow the Olympics in Japan.
The organization also announced that each competition venue will have maximum audience of 10 thousand people, being allowed to enter only from the local population. Spectators will be drawn from among the local population who have purchased a ticket.
The audience will have to wear a mask during the games and gestures such as loud talking or shouting will not be allowed., ask athletes for autographs, come into physical contact with other fans, shake towels or similar. The sale and consumption of alcohol during the event is prohibited.
If there is a large increase in Covid-19 cases, the organization is considering holding the games without an audience.
- athletes
Athletes are also subject to restrictions in order to participate in the Tokyo Olympics. They will do daily tests, will not be able to travel (except between competitions, trainings and the Olympic Village) and will stay away from the public.
The number of representatives from abroad has been reduced and the committee only allows athletes and essential people to travel to the delegations.
- Withdrawal of Volunteers
Faced with criticism from doctors of the Japanese government, because of the Olympic Games during the pandemic, around 10,000 of the 80,000 volunteers withdrew from participating in the event.
Despite the shortage of volunteers, the holding of the games will not be affected, as there will be no foreign audience and local participation has also been reduced.
- Financial impact
With the ban on foreign audiences, the organizing committee will reimburse around 600,000 tickets for the Olympic games and 300,000 for the Paralympics. Another financial impact is the absence of foreign tourists in Tokyo. Hotel and restaurant chains will not receive the expected audience and, for those who made investments, this generates an unforeseen loss.
