Due to the pandemic we have experienced in recent years, the use of distance courses in our country has increased significantly. However, only 2.3% of the courses that are offered in this category obtained the maximum score in the quality indicator made by the federal government. This same data is recorded for graduations in the face-to-face category, with only 6.2% of face-to-face teaching institutions reaching the maximum grade.

This evaluation is done by means of a calculation based on the average of the grades of the students who took the ENADE test (National Student Performance Examination). These results were obtained by the tests that were carried out in November 2021, and had their disclosure made by INEP (National Institute of Educational Studies and Research) last Monday, 12 September.
The grades that were released show a percentage of distance courses that received a lower maximum score compared to face-to-face courses. In addition, it was through the distance learning modality that we could see the most significant growth in registrations for higher education courses.
In 2019, an amount of 1.5 million people joined the modality. That number ended up jumping to more than 2 million in 2020, an increase that represents about 26% compared to the previous year. During that same time, the number of people who enrolled in face-to-face teaching courses ended up showing a drop of around 14% during the same period.
It is worth noting here that, in addition to recording 2.3% of the courses that reached the maximum MEC score, almost half of the courses that were evaluated (47.8%) ended up reaching grades 1 and 2, lower than the minimum required by the MEC, which is the note 3.
Private higher education institutions, which have concentrated more than 70% of enrollments for category, also had a percentage of courses that reached the maximum score much lower than the network public. Among all the for-profit private category colleges, only 1.5% achieved grade 5 in the MEC, and this number was almost 8 times higher in federal universities, which reached 11.4% of maximum grade for the MEC.
In some years prior to 2019, the two teaching modalities had very similar grades by ENADE. The expansion of distance learning courses ended up becoming increasingly notable from 2017 onwards, when the then president Michel Temer signed a decree that aimed to make rules more flexible that could facilitate the opening of centers EAD.
