The cartoonist received the Personality of the Year award in a tribute from the Brazil-Japan Chamber of Commerce (CCBJ).
The award ceremony was held in Tokyo and was attended by Maurício. During the event, the author thanked him for the honor and stated that the moment further strengthened his commitment to Japan.
He still stayed three weeks in Japan to attend the premiere of Monica's Gang live action which was shown to Brazilian families residing in the Asian country. In addition, he participated in other events that celebrated the fans and the success of the Brazilian comic book line.

Turma da Mônica projects in Japan
In addition to receiving the international award, Sousa took the opportunity to share the news that he is structuring a project by Monica's Gang in Japan.
To the news site Faces, he declared: “The opportunity arose to work with the Gang and our characters in Japan. We are in progress and with a very tangible possibility of putting this project into action soon”.
The new venture has the support of his partner Alice Takeda, according to the cartoonist, Takeda is responsible for the entire project. In addition, she also contributes her feminine touch and knowledge of the Asian language.
The international award was received in April with great joy by Maurício de Sousa and he expressed immense gratitude for realizing that his work managed to cross borders and reach a country that he has a lot of admiration.
Currently, the Monica's Gang comics are already translated into other languages, including Spanish and English.
The cartoonist's return to Brazil also represents an important date: Mônica's 60th birthday. Maurício says he is happy to be able to celebrate another birthday of his character most famous.
