First step: minimum age

First of all, it is necessary to keep in mind that the minimum age to obtain the CNH varies according to the desired qualification category.

For category A (motorcycles) and ACC (mopeds), you must be at least 18 years old. For categories B (cars) and AAC (automatic cars), the minimum age is 18 years. For categories C, D and E (cargo and passenger transport vehicles), the minimum age is 21 years.

Step Two: Required Documentation

You will need the following documents to start the qualification process:

  • Identity document (RG) or other official document with photo;
  • Individual Taxpayer Registration (CPF);
  • Proof of address;
  • Proof of electoral discharge (for those over 18);
  • Military enlistment certificate (for men over 18 years old).

Third step: enroll in the driving school

After gathering the necessary documentation, you must enroll in a Driver Training Center (CFC), also known as a driving school.

The first step is to take a theoretical driver training course, which addresses topics such as Traffic, defensive driving, first aid, among others. At the end of the course, you will take a theory test.

Fourth step: DMV exams

After passing the theoretical test, you will need to undergo a medical and psychological examination at a clinic accredited by the State Traffic Department (Detran).

These exams are intended to verify that you are physically and mentally fit to drive a vehicle.

Fifth step: start of practical classes

As soon as you pass the medical and psychological exams, you can start practical driving lessons.

The minimum number of practical classes varies according to the desired CNH category. During classes, you will learn maneuvers, driving techniques and become familiar with the vehicle.

Sixth step: booking the practical driving test

After completing the minimum number of practical classes, you will be able to schedule the practical driving test, carried out by the Detran.

In this exam, an evaluator will check your driving skills, such as vehicle control, respect for traffic laws and security.

If you pass the practical exam, you will receive a Permission to Drive (PPD), which is valid for one year. After this period, if there is no serious or very serious infraction, you will receive the definitive CNH.

CNH suspension score: what changed for 2023?

First, know that the driver can receive several types of fines before being suspended. Among them are: light, medium, serious or very serious fine. Each deducts a number of points from the qualification, which in the past were totaled at 20.

With the new CTB, the limit has increased to 40. Since each fine deducts:

  • 3 points: minor infraction;
  • 4 points: medium infraction;
  • 5 points: serious infraction;
  • 6 points: very serious infraction.

Upon reaching the limit of 40 points, the CNH is suspended and the driver must face a recycling process to regain the right to type. However, the account to reach the limit is not linear and varies according to the severity of the fine.

The right to drive is suspended when:

  • The driver reaches 20 points, with two or more very serious infractions;
  • 30 points, with a very serious infraction;
  • 40 points, without any very serious infraction or if you exercise remunerated activity.

Now you know everything you need to do to fulfill the dream of being qualified!
