Researchers at the School of Economics at Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) point out that Brazil loses 2 percentage points in GDP (Gross Domestic Product) annually due to the precarious education offered. In the evaluation, relationships were made about how education is capable of impacting a country.
The researchers consider the PISA analyses, organized by the OECD (Organization for International Cooperation) Economic Development) and by TIMSS (translated from English, Trends in International Mathematics and Studies in Science). The last Pisa assessment took place in 2018, being published in 2019; Brazil has an average of 382 in mathematics and the OECD average is 489.

The research also shows that the growth of wealth that the country is able to develop happens due to educational quality. The fees presented at the school are therefore not crucial. Quality in education is the main point for people to grow financially.
Education in Brazil is an economic investment
André Portela, professor at FGV and principally responsible for the study, reveals that every necessary condition for sustainable human growth is formed by a cycle of virtues.
“It's not just that the country produces more, there is an improvement in people's lives, in health, with less crime, higher wages, innovation, political participation”, analyzed the professor. Schools that guarantee better teaching, according to the survey, demonstrate a reduction in the homicide rate and quality in other purely social aspects.
Studies led Eric Hanushek, from Stanford University, to conclude in 2022 that South American countries would gain much more from investing in basic education at the level of Pisa. For him, even in the 21st century, students would earn US$ 76 trillion for their countries.
The developing country needs to be allied to quality in education. The growth of the economy in Portugal, South Korea, Poland and Singapore was due to a long investment in schools and this is a basic example that the quality of teaching was above average.
Impact of PISA
With the indicated evaluation score, most Brazilian students showed low performance in the evaluated subjects: Mathematics, Science and Reading. Understanding the text, identifying graphics and counting numbers are problems for Brazilian education.
This downward development, if it lasts, will ensure that Brazil takes about three decades to reach the level of Japan. Certainly, these low data were evidenced by the Covid-19 pandemic.
