O Ipiranga museum, in São Paulo, underwent some reforms and revitalizations over a long period (about nine years). But the good news is that the works came to an end and the museum reopened its doors last Thursday, September 8th. The return of the museum with its doors open took place amidst the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the Independence of Brazil.

Thus, on September 7th, a symbolic inauguration of the place was held, which received some students from public and municipal schools in the state, in addition to the professionals in which they were involved in the process of recovering the museum. After that, on the following day, the museum returned to receive the general public, inaugurating around eleven permanent exhibitions.

Those who visit the site will be able to find a collection that is a little different from what they were used to seeing before the renovations, with 3,700 items, most of which are unpublished. Approximately 350 pieces in the museum received a so-called multisensory treatment, which allows people to interact in different ways. tactile or olfactory form, for example, an environment that contains smell, in addition to material in Braille made available for the disabled visuals.

The objects on display at the site date from the 19th and 20th centuries, and it is also possible to find some older items, which are part of the old colonial Brazil. Among them are paintings, sculptures, coins, text documents, photographs, objects covered in fabric and wood, as well as two large models.

“Before having undergone the reforms, the Museu do Ipiranga was seen as if it were a museum of the elites, because that is what it implied in the exhibitions for a long time”, said Vânia Carneiro de Carvalho, current general coordinator of the design and implementation project for the exhibitions. Still according to her, the revitalization of the museum also aims to mark a new phase of curatorship.

The presentations presented will be divided into two parts, in order to 'Understand Society', where six samples on the Brazilian society and some historical processes, and also the part to ‘Understand the Museum’, which has five areas dedicated to the backstage of the place.

It is also worth noting that there will be a temporary exhibition, scheduled to open in November, called ‘Memories of Independence’, which focuses on historical and also social events that are associated with the theme.

The great classics of the Museu do Ipiranga can be found in the exhibition ‘Uma História do Brasil’. The painting by Pedro Américo, which many people know or would like to know, called Independência ou Morte, it is the main attraction of the place that starts at the monumental axis and crosses the hall and the staircase of the Salon Noble.
