It is estimated that there were 750 people and that the ship was 20 to 30 meters long. However, the UN International Organization for Migration said via social media that initial reports suggested that 400 people were on board the vessel.
State broadcaster ERT said the boat sank off the coast of the Libyan city of Tobruk, south of the Greek island of Crete. It is speculated that the vessel was going to Italy.
According to Reuters, this was the worst accident in Greece and one of the worst this year – until then. Remember that in February, 96 people died when a wooden boat crashed into rocks during a storm off the coast of Calabria, Italy.
Greece is a route for immigrants and refugees
Also according to the publication, Greece is one of the main entry routes for immigrants and refugees from the Middle East, Asia and Africa in the European Union. According to the text, most of them cross to the Greek islands from Türkiye.
However, there are still a large number of vessels that make a longer route from Turkey to Italy, passing through Greece. This is believed to be the case with this boat that sank off the Greek coast.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, called on governments and authorities to work together on a solution to situations like the one reported. He calls for the creation of safer paths for refugees from war and poverty.
“Just sadness and anger after another deadly tragedy in the Mediterranean Sea,” Filippo posted on his Twitter account.
