On April 30th, the first solar eclipse of the year will occur, however, it will be a partial eclipse that, unfortunately, will not be visible in any part of Brazil. The moon's shadow will only be projected on Earth in the southern and western points of our continent, more specifically in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Bolivia. Check out more details about this phenomenon that attracts so many admirers below.

How do solar eclipses happen?
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes "in front" of the Sun (from our perspective) and blocks its light, which often occurs during a new moon phase. Thus, when two stars are “perfectly” aligned, we have a total solar eclipse because the moon is able to perfectly overlap the surface of the star, the Sun.
However, when we speak of a partial eclipse, the Moon passes only by the “edge” of the Sun's circumference. While not nearly as impressive (considering a total solar eclipse turns day to night in a matter of minutes), partial eclipses are also amazing to watch.
When will the next solar eclipse occur?
During the 30th, in Brazil, the Moon will pass very close to the Sun, mainly in the afternoon. Therefore, even if it is not characterized as an eclipse for us, amateur astronomers who have the proper equipment can register this phenomenon in the stars throughout the day.
However, to view the Sun, during any time and type of solar eclipse, it is necessary to use some type of solar filter and binoculars in the telescope. In addition, the phenomenon can also be observed with the naked eye, as long as special glasses or lenses from a 14-gauge welder's mask are used. It is important to remember that one should never look at the Sun with an X-ray plate or any other type of material.
This time, the event will be accompanied by a total lunar eclipse on May 16, 2022, so get ready for one of the most fascinating lunar events visible without the need for special devices! For lunar eclipses, no equipment or filters are needed, but if you can count on a good pair of astronomy binoculars, you will have a special experience.
