This was the first time he has publicly commented on the matter since more than 1,000 AI experts, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, signed an open letter demanding the halt of development on some AI systems.

In an interview given to the Reuters news agency, Gates said that a break would not necessarily be the solution to the challenges associated with AI.
Otherwise, he argued that it would be more fruitful to focus on how best to utilize the technological advances that have already been achieved in this area.
Bill Gates also highlighted the potential benefits of AI, such as its ability to help reduce inequalities and also highlighted the need to identify and address the potential risks that are associated with this technology.
A day before the publication of the open letter, Bill Gates wrote a post with the title “The age of AI has begun”, in which he shared his conviction about the revolutionary potential of this technology, comparing it to the impact of the internet and cell phones.
He outlined his perspective on how AI could be used to generate positive social impact by addressing global challenges such as poverty, health and climate change.
“I think asking a particular group to take a break from developing artificial intelligences does not solve the challenges. Clearly, there are huge benefits related to this technology. What we need to do is identify the tricky areas,” Gates said.
The tycoon also questioned the feasibility of implementing a global pause in the advancement of Artificial Intelligence, noting that he can't think of who would be responsible for leading this shutdown, not even if all countries would agree to such a thing measure.
He admitted that there is a diversity of opinion in the field of AI and that the details related to any outage would be quite complex and challenging to implement.
Finally, it is important to mention that Microsoft has made significant investments in AI as a way to support the OpenAI, the company responsible for the development of ChatGPT, the AI system mentioned in the open letter that Elon Musk signed.
