FIES for the medical course increased? See what the Ministry of Education says

According to the Ministry of Education (MEC), this last Wednesday (14), the ceiling for financing Fies increased for the medical course. From now on, the limit will be R$ 60 thousand.

Previously, the limit was BRL 52,805.66, equivalent to BRL 8,800 per month for half-yearly financing to take place. However, the limit for the other courses of the MEC follows the same: BRL 42,983.70.

This change will take effect from the second half of 2023, both for new financing contracted or renewed in this period.

Ceiling change welcomed by students

The G1, in March of this year, published a piece of news that reported that low-income students thought about dropping out of course, mainly due to the difference between the cost of college and the funding limit for program.

The ceiling started in 2016, when the Federal Government adopted these measures to try to reduce the financial losses that FIES caused to the Union's coffers.

In the case of the medical course, several institutions charge much more than R$ 10,000, making them need to pay the difference every month – the co-payment.

In several cases, more than R$ 1,000 was disbursed every month to finance the study.

How does Fies work?

After graduation, students must pay the entire amount that the Federal Government disbursed during the years provided for in the contract.

To enroll in FIES, you must access the website FIES Selection, search for the program and perform all the necessary steps to achieve program membership.

After the selection, it is necessary to go to the CPSA Commission of your Educational Institution to verify all the information. Afterwards, you need to look for your bank (Caixa or Banco do Brasil, for example), to issue the contract.

The basic requirements are:

  • Having taken the National High School Examination (Enem) from 2010 onwards;
  • Having achieved an average of 450 or more in the tests, in addition to having scored more than 0 in the essay;
  • Have a monthly family income of up to 3 minimum wages.
