Legumes are in the family Fabaceae, which provide us with very nutritious foods, which are a source of vitamins C, K and the B complex, especially folic acid and B1. In addition, they are rich in mineral salts. Mainly iron, calcium, potassium, phosphorus and zinc. They are very important in food daily.

Recently, in a study carried out by Brazilian and foreign researchers, ten new species of these plants were discovered. All native to the Neotropical region that covers regions from Central America to southern Brazil. The bad news is that these species are in serious danger of extinction.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) establishes some analysis criteria on the state of conservation. All were used by the researchers, who verified that most of these ten plants discovered are at least in some category of risk of extinction.
According to what was said to Agência Brasil, the doctoral student at the National School of Tropical Botany at the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, Alexandre Gibau de Lima, who is also one of the authors of the study that made the discoveries, “many of these species occur in areas outside conservation units, in areas that are small fragments around large plantations, in areas that have been urbanized”.
In such a way, it is impossible to establish any actions or measures that must be taken for the conservation of the species, since there is not yet a wide knowledge about the plants.
Among those that were discovered, we can highlight two. Check it out below:
- Barbatimão-do-rio-doce: tree that can reach 20 meters in height found only in the Atlantic Forest;
- Styphnodendron velutinum: tree of up to five meters, located in the northwest of Minas Gerais, in the Cerrado;
The next step should be to connect this scientific study with conservation centers, seeking to find measures and alternatives for the conservation of these species. In addition, in order for plants to be used, whether for medicinal, food or timber purposes, greater knowledge about the species is required.
