India's population will be greater than China's by 2023
According to the UN report, India's population currently stands at 1.412 billion compared to China's 1.426 billion. However, India will overtake China as the world's most populous nation by next year.
Furthermore, according to the projection, India should have a population of 1.688 billion in 2050, which will be far ahead of China's 1.317 billion inhabitants estimated for the same period.
Currently, there is a decline in birth rates in developing countries, but more than half of the predicted growth in the world's population in the coming decades will be concentrated in eight countries. They are: India, Egypt, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Philippines, Pakistan and Tanzania.
World population and environmental debate
With the rapid population growth, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres mentioned that this population milestone serves to remind us of our responsibility to care for the planet. After all, our natural resources are becoming scarce, while pollution and unbridled consumption are increasing.
Consequently, the environmental crises and this population growth raise worrying questions, such as the emergence of new pandemics, water depletion, mainly due to the maintenance of livestock, as well as the use of non-renewable energy sources, something that is already outdated.
The question remains about how we are going to deal with the problems that are arising due to the irregular population increase, since this Accelerated growth makes it more difficult to combat hunger and malnutrition, eradicate poverty, and increase coverage in health systems and education.
On the other hand, reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially those related to education, gender equality and health, will help to reduce fertility levels and, consequently, curb the growth of global population. Therefore, it is something that deserves efforts to happen.
