Transferring money through the platform was already allowed and did not gain as much prominence as expected. Now, after BC approval, the payment of purchases can generate a “boom” for the application.

Payments on WhatsApp, formerly WhatsApp Pay, was approved by BC in 2021, but did not achieve what was expected. Pix as payment, among us since 2020, was the fastest and most used method.

On the other hand, physically in stores, the Pix was presented in smaller quantities. For many, paying with a credit card is even easier and WhatsApp can take advantage of this facility.

The user's card will be registered on the messenger's platform. For companies, debit, credit and prepaid models will be accepted.

O debit card is seen by experts as a possible victim of the Pix, and may be in low circulation. In 2022, however, transactions grew by 7.4% and credit card usage was at 24.6%.

There is still no release date for the tool.

The project involved large companies and carried out tests with Mercado Pago, Cielo, Rede, Getnet and other companies to carry out the transaction. Those responsible for the platform will be Mastercard and Visa.

“We built an open platform with the participation of several Brazilian acquirers to ensure the access of the as many companies and people as possible at the service,” said Guilherme Horn, head of WhatsApp in America Latin.

Despite the approval, there is no date for the launch to be made. The Central Bank informs that the flags need to communicate in advance before starting to operate in the new tool and possibly it will not be validated in March.
