In a small town in Australia, one tunnel railway glows in its own darkness, in a bluish tint. Located in Helensburgh, New South Wales, this tunnel is just 624 meters long, called the Metropolitan Tunnel, now acts as a tourist attraction, given the strong glow it emits naturally.
Those who visit the Metropolitan today can be amazed at the beauty of the light show and glows emitted by it, but all this has a relatively simple explanation and even a little obvious.

The tunnel's history begins in 1889, when it was founded as part of the route to the first train from Helensburgh, being used basically to transport the coal extracted from the mines locations. Some time after its inauguration, some extensions and changes to the railroad tracks made the tunnel obsolete, which was closed in 1915 and was practically abandoned until the 1990s.
With all this time without human interference, nature took over the place, until, in 1995, the authorities decided to clean the interior of the tunnel. When the cleaning crew arrived, however, they were startled by the beautiful blue lights that glowed in the darkness of the tunnel.
However, as mentioned earlier, it's clear that the material the tunnel was built out of didn't have any ability to glow or anything like that. These are bioluminescent insects that decided to establish one of the largest colonies in the country there.
In this way, what was once the Metropolitan Tunnel is now the Helensburgh Glow Worm Tunnel, translated as “Helensburgh Glow Worm Tunnel”. Those insectsthey settle in the dark, using their natural “light bulbs” to attract prey, and in this case, thousands of tourists a year.
However, due to this large movement of tourists, the nature that made the place what it is today has become threatened, so that the visits were controlled and reduced in 2019, in order to protect the insects, which were suffering from human presence, lights and flashes excessive.
