A World Health Organization (WHO) has revised its guidelines regarding the use of sweeteners and released new recommendations. According to the WHO, the use of sweeteners such as saccharin, sucralose, stevia, aspartame is no longer recommended. and others, as a strategy for weight control or to reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases transmissible.
This new WHO recommendation is based on a systematic review of available evidence. The results indicate that the use of sweeteners does not provide significant long-term benefits in reducing body fat in adults or children. Therefore, the use of sweeteners for these purposes is no longer recommended by the WHO.

The WHO disclosed that the results of the systematic review indicate possible undesirable effects of the prolonged use of sweeteners. Among these effects are increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and mortality in adults.
During the research, the institution pointed out that the substitution of sugar for the sweetener may not be as advantageous in the long term.
Instead, the organization suggests that people consider other approaches to reducing sugar consumption, how to opt for naturally sweet fruits and foods, as well as how to choose foods and drinks without added sugar sugar.
Also according to the WHO survey, the recommendation to avoid the use of sweeteners is not applicable to hygiene and personal care, but is intended for everyone, with the exception of people with a tendency to diabetes.
Anvisa studies the new recommendation in Brazil
In a statement, Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) stressed that the purpose of the WHO study is not to review the safety profile of sugar-free sweeteners. The recommendation is considered conditional, as more information is needed on the consequences and benefits of its use.
For Anvisa, countries should start discussing the effectiveness of the product in a particular way and consider the consumption of the sweetener in the local territory.
