The 3,500-year-old jewelry collection

While excavating the Tell El-Amarna necropolis on the outskirts of the Nile River, Egypt, archaeologists from the University of Cambridge found a set of very ancient jewels. According to records, the “treasure” is about 3500 years old and was owned by a woman, as it was found in her tomb.

The set consisted of a genuine gold necklace and three rings made of soapstone and also gold. Furthermore, the rings contained engravings representing Egyptian gods: one honored the god of childbirth, Bes, and the others had references to Nefertiti, the lady of the two lands.

The artifacts were contemporary with the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt, whose dominant figure at the time was Pharaoh Amenhotep IV, and were located in an ancient royal capital once called Akhetaten.

The discovery process

It was thanks to the Amarna project (officialized in 2005) that this record came to fruition. Through it, the region where the jewels were located has been the subject of research for a long time.

Soon, many artifacts and documents that brought information about the civilizations of that time were and are being restored. Researchers are constantly finding everything from personal utensils to valuable objects at the time that allow us to have a minimal idea of what life was like in past times. Thus, expanding knowledge about a given period.
