Report points out that Brazilians are importing fewer products from China

Brazil is one of the countries that most consume products from the Chinese market. Practicing more affordable prices than those seen in Brazil, companies like AliExpress, Shein and Shopee are some examples of popular shopping destinations for Brazilian consumers.

Santander numbers point to a reduction in imports of small value items

A report conducted by Santander shows that low value imports through international orders totaled US$701 million in April this year. That's a 20% drop compared to the same period in 2022.

To guide itself, the bank's survey used data from the Brazilian trade balance, released on Friday by the central bank.

Santander analysts attributed the data disclosed to a consumer concern with a possible taxation of items for purchases outside Brazil. The macroeconomic environment experienced in the country was also cited.

On the other hand, it was also pointed out that the decrease in exports is positive news for the domestic market, since consumers can look for their items here.

As the news circulates, shares of some retailers in Brazil are rising. An example of this is Renner's shares, which saw a considerable increase in price on the Ibovespa.

It is worth mentioning that there is no official data that indicates a real drop in sales and financial operations of companies like Shein, aliexpress, among others. The ranking of small value imports is used only as a thermometer of the current situation.

Shein's approach to Brazil

Shein, one of the most famous international stores in Brazil, decided to open physical stores in the country. To test the market, the brand has launched some so-called pop-up stores, which will temporarily operate during 2022.

In São Paulo, the Chinese brand's store was open for five days in November at Shopping Vila Olímpia. The same thing happened in March of the same year, only this time in a commercial area in Rio de Janeiro.
