Science: UK records birth of babies with DNA from three people

After eight years since the approval of the technology by the authorities, it has been confirmed that at least one child with DNA from three different people born to parents in the UK. Although this information is not slightly unprecedented in the country, as the novelty revolves around the discovery by reporters of the The Guardian, as they managed to get an official response from the information.

The University of Newcastle and the Newcastle Fertility Center are at the forefront of mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT), a special form of fertilization in vitro (IVF) which aims to prevent serious genetic diseases in future babies.

UK approves MRT, registers babies with DNA from three people

MRT involves replacing defective mitochondria with healthy mitochondria from a donor, ensuring good mitochondrial health in the offspring.

The difference lies in the relationship between the nuclear material and the small amount of non-nuclear DNA, which plays a role in producing the cell's energy units known as mitochondria.

While most of the genes are present in the nuclear material, the non-nuclear DNA present in the mitochondria plays a vital role in cellular energy production.

In most cases, the mother's egg contributes the nucleus and most of the mitochondria to the developing embryo.

However, in children conceived through mitochondrial replacement therapy, a donated egg is used to provide the supply of mitochondria.

This means that the nuclear genetic material of the parents is combined with the mitochondria of the donated egg, ensuring healthy functioning of mitochondria and preventing the transmission of genetic diseases mitochondrial.

The UK achieved the mark and held records eight years after legislative approval, being the first to approve the MRT. However, for the sake of the safety and privacy of the individuals involved, the cases were kept confidential.

This approach aims to protect the families' identity and preserve the confidentiality of the medical procedures performed, ensuring that scientific advances are well guarded.
