partnership objectives
Fiocruz established a partnership with the main objective of preventing and controlling epidemics, pandemics and infectious diseases, including covid-19, influenza, zika, chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever, tuberculosis and oropouche. In addition, the partnership aims to develop global health public goods such as vaccines, therapies, rapid diagnostic tests and pharmaceuticals.
According to Fiocruz, negotiations for signing the partnership began before 2019, but were postponed due to the pandemic and political issues. The institution credits the change in the federal government as the reason for the possibility of establishing the partnership today and of bringing relations between Brazil and China closer together.
Knowledge Exchange
Researchers from both countries will work together at both headquarters, in Beijing and in Rio de Janeiro. In addition to promoting the exchange of technologies and knowledge, the partnership provides for joint projects, such as the development of new vaccines, therapeutic antibodies, and drugs for acute and chronic infectious diseases, as well as collaborations in medicine tropical.
The Beijing center will be housed in the Institute of Microbiology, while the Brazilian headquarters will be located in the Center for Technological Development in Health (CDTS), currently under construction and scheduled for completion by the end of 2024.
