Still in 2020, Donald Trump, at the time president of the United States, defended the banning of TikTok from the country. However, the country's Congress, led by Joe Biden, the current US president, did not release the suspension of the app and stressed that more studies on the app were needed.

In this ocasion, donald trump argued that the Chinese app compromised national security and had the power to access sensitive personal data of US users from its headquarters, located in China. In a note, TikTok denied the information.

However, the discussion about privacy, personal data protection and cybersecurity around TikTok has not ended. On the contrary. Today, different countries are making efforts to ban the application from corporate devices belonging to government members.

In December 2022, following the lifting of the ban on the app by the US Congress, a measure was passed to suspend TikTok from smartphones and other government devices.

The measure only allows the use of the app on exceptional occasions and to meet research requirements, law enforcement or promotion of the country's security.

Other countries are also suspending TikTok

On February 24, the European Commission decided to ban TikTok on cell phones of members of the Council of Corporate Management and its employees, as a measure to protect national security and to avoid possible espionage.

Thus, with such measures, countries seek to avoid alleged misuse of data by Beijing, especially to prevent the dissemination of advertisements or news aimed at favoring the government of China.

In addition, the growing concern of countries with privacy and data protection makes governments raise the alert to maintain the cybersecurity of their devices, especially those associated with strategic roles such as presidents and heads of cabinet.

In a note, Brooke Oberwetter, spokeswoman for the application, says that the measures are political theater and have not gone through a deliberation process.
