Starting this school year, on March 1, Korean schools will keep records of school bullying grade 8 for 2 years after graduation, according to the Ministry of Education on 22 February.
There are now in the South Korean country some categories of school bullying offenses, level 8 being one of the most serious that results in school transfer.

The current principle is to keep Grade 8 records for two years after graduation, but they can be deleted after an examination. The new policy, however, will keep the record of category 8 offenders for 2 years after graduation, no exception.
Punishment Levels for Bullying in South Korea
- Level 1: Written apology to the victim;
- Level 2: Prohibited contact with the victim;
- Level 3: Voluntary school service;
- Level 4: Voluntary community service;
- Level 5: Special educational program and behavioral therapy sessions;
- Level 6: School suspension;
- Level 7: Class change;
- Level 8: Change of school;
- Level 9: School expulsion (not applicable for high school students).
An official from the Ministry of Education commented that the hearings will be stricter from now on. Currently, there are cases where the record is deleted even if some data is missing.
The change in policy is aimed at tackling bullying in Korean schools, which has been a growing problem. The decision was made to ensure that bullies are held accountable for their actions even after they graduate.
