Mysterious holes at the bottom of the ocean catch the attention of scientists

Teams from the US Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) identified linear clusters of holes on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean during an expedition. The origin of the holes remains unknown, but researchers are already studying some possibilities. Follow this article to understand better about these mysterious holes at the bottom of the ocean and possible causes for this. Good reading!

Appearance of mysterious holes in the Atlantic

This isn't the first time mysterious holes have been found on the ocean floor. Previously, in July 2004, a team from the same agency found the cavities while exploring the bottom of the Atlantic. At the time, the unusual holes were at a depth of just over 2,000 meters.

Now they have been sighted in the Mid-Atlantic Dorsal mountain range, which is close to the Azores archipelago. The discovery took place during the Voyage to the Ridge 2022 expedition, also in July.

Perfectly aligned holes

The mysterious holes were located at depths ranging between 1.4 and 1.5 thousand meters, and what most caught the attention of researchers is that they are perfectly aligned. That is, they present a linear pattern. So far researchers have not been able to figure out how they would have been made.

Hypotheses that may explain the emergence of holes

According to NOAA researchers, human involvement in this case is unlikely due to the depth of the location where the marks were observed. According to them, the holes probably have a biological origin and could have been made by the excavation of some very large marine animal.

For now the “Lebensspuren”, or Vestiges of Life, are the possibility most defended by scientists. This hypothesis argues that the holes were originated by fossils of living beings, as well as eggs and waste from marine animals. In addition to these, there were several guesses on social networks regarding the origin of the mysterious holes, users of Twitter considered possible extraterrestrial involvement or the presence of a monster like the one in Lago Ness.

The find underscores how little is known about the area, which is a vast, unexplored mountain range that spans hides deep beneath the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, known as the Mid-Atlantic Cordillera (SEA).
