Movement for zero tariff in public transport takes over the streets of downtown SP

In the center of the city of São Paulo, on the night of last Thursday, the 29th, a certain group of people participated in a demonstration in favor of zero fare on public transport. Summoned by social institutions and trade unionists, the action began in front of the Municipal Theater of São Paulo.

The demonstration began when people present at the scene burned a turnstile, demonstrating against charging for tickets on subways, buses and trains in the city.

After the act, the demonstrators walked to Praça da República, ending the protest at Praça Roosevelt, in Consolação.

Zero tariff demonstration in São Paulo

During the demonstration, Altino Prazeres, a member of the São Paulo Subway Union and one of the coordinators of the event, emphasized that the main objective was to denounce the high fares and the inadequacy of public transport services for the population.

In addition, he stressed that the protest also had the symbolic purpose of remembering the events that took place in June 2013.

Prazeres highlighted that the recent proposals presented by the City Hall and the Chamber of Councilors of São Paulo in relation to the free pass represent an opportunity for a debate more in-depth on the topic.

He also mentioned that, with the decrease in the number of users on public transport due to the pandemic and the emergence of new technologies and remote work practices, entrepreneurs have sought more government funding municipal.

In response to the demonstration, the trade unionist stated that he will take advantage of the proposals presented by government bodies and seek an effective debate on the zero tariff.

He highlighted the importance of consulting the population and holding a plebiscite to find out what the interest and collective will is in relation to this issue.
