First of all, it is good to reinforce that it is not that these groups do not want to work. Far from it! In the United States, for example, 55% of generation z feel pressured to have work experience while still in high school. And more: 75% of them are more concerned about finding a job than flirting and relationships.

What happens is that they expect different things than their parents in their careers. If before stability and staying for many years in a company were priorities, today this is an outdated view.

What do Generation Z and millennials expect from the market?

A poll by Gallup revealed that these are the three things people born between 1989 and 2001 – who feel trapped in trauma and uncertainty – expect from a job:

  1. That the company values the well-being of the employee;
  2. That the leading figures are ethical;
  3. That the company cares about diversity and inclusion.

Also according to this research, the turning point began during the pandemic, especially with regard to people's well-being. For them, the health You need to be up to date both physically and mentally. Both groups expect the company to have some program that the employee can rely on when he is not feeling well.

As for ethics, the change in behavior started a little earlier. Young adults are tired of news of scandals at large corporations and are also more aware of what a toxic work climate is like.

They have more billing power and fight for peace among colleagues.

They want all kinds of people to be welcome in the company. They demand respect, equality and inclusion. In addition, they hope to see people of all races, sexual orientations and gender identities working together.

Work when you want and where you want

A report by Forbes magazine also showed that the new youth seek more flexibility about the workplace. For them, clocking in and physically working in an office is not attractive.

The generations in question prefer remote work – the famous home office – and flexible working hours. For them, this type of service is directly linked to a better quality of life. Some even prefer a hybrid regime: some days at home and others at the office.

Still according to Forbes, a tendency among new workers is not to take on tasks beyond their functions. This is a movement called quiet quitting. They defend that doing beyond what is agreed is a waste of time, in addition to an effort disproportionate to the salary received.

More turnover

One of the most characteristic behaviors observed among younger people is changing jobs in relatively short periods. Generation z and millennials are not afraid to leave a job they started three months ago to start another.

For Harvard University career consultant Gorick Ng, the main explanation may lie in frustrated job expectations. “No job is as exciting as what we see in movies and television,” he says. For him, groups find it difficult to deal with boredom and frustration, as they are used to the short-term rewards of social networks.

In addition, according to him, the great access to information of the new generations leads them to have more options.

“More options means more turnover, which means more pressure on employers to prove they prioritize and engage talent.”
