Why are soda cans in Hawaii different?

The taste of soda is different in every country, and we know that. What many don't know is that the can of the drink can also vary, which makes manufacturing even more unique.

For Sam Denby of Half as Interest, Hawaii cans are made differently. He explains that the can was designed with different shapes around the neck and has a larger opening in the can. This is a different production from what happens in the United States, as the Hawaiian cans are even older.

In Hawaii, soda cans are the same as they were in the 90s

In the USA, until 1998, cans were also manufactured in this format and after that year they discovered that cans were not as economical as they thought. They then manufactured a can that guaranteed greater savings and reduced the lid. Sam says that this change of standard would not be an incentive for Hawaii, as sodas are manufactured locally.

“In a market as small and remote as Hawaii, changing all the equipment in the can factory, not to mention the bottling plants to fit the smaller lid, is too expensive to be worth it. So, instead of investing in refurbishing the entire archipelago can infrastructure, Hawaii is limited to 206es [old can manufacturing model,” said Sam Denby.

Basically, the reasons that led Hawaii to continue with the same can have to do with the number of local consumers and because it has its own factory. For them, it would not be so interesting to modify the can for a much smaller audience compared to the United States.
