Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige won't be overseeing the hero's next adventure. Fans are still hopeful that the impasse will be overcome. However, Sony wants to carve out its own future for the superhero.
Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vincinquerra confirmed that "at the moment the door is closed". “We had a great experience with [Kevin Feige] on the Spider-Man movies,” he said.
“We tried to see if there was a way to resolve this. The Marvel people are amazing, we have a lot of respect for them. On the other hand, we also have some fantastic people. Kevin didn't do all the work."
He added: “Spider-Man was fine before the Marvel movies. He did even better with the MCU movies. Now that we have our own universe, he will play the other characters as well. I think we are quite capable of doing what we have to do here.”
Sony clearly believes that, following the box office success of Venom and the widespread acclaim of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, it can spin its own web of stories.
While Sony says the door is closed, director Jon Favreau - one of the MCU's architects - still has hope. “I've been talking to everyone about it. I am cautiously optimistic.”
