The Oswaldo Cruz Institute, of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), signed a partnership with the Agostinho Neto University (UAN), in Luanda, Angola, for partnerships between the institutions.
Thus, the idea is to have future teaching and research partnerships between the institutions, strengthening Brazil's ties with other African institutions. In this way, there will be more collaboration for tropical diseases – mainly malaria and tuberculosis.

Other diseases must enter the cycle, such as: HIV, arboviruses, transmissible diseases. In addition, the focus will also be on maternal, child and reproductive health, in addition to the association between climate and health.
Understand the motivations behind this partnership
According to the IOC coordinator, Anna Cristina Calçada Carvalho, the technical-scientific partnership aims to aims to strengthen the relationship between countries in the southern hemisphere, especially those that speak Portuguese.
Thus, according to Carvalho, “the focus of the IOC is on contributing to the training of human resources in these places. We can help them face public health problems linked, especially, to communicable diseases”, he stressed.
In addition, he made it clear that all IOC postgraduate programs are part of the partnership, to train masters and doctors in these subjects.
What are the next steps for Fiocruz and Angola?
From now on, both Institutions will set out to elaborate a work plan for this partnership. In August, there is a forecast for a meeting with Brazilian and Angolan representatives to complete the work.
The validity of this partnership will be 5 years, which can be renewed in the future. This is an important step towards closer relations between Brazil and countries in Africa, since this is not the first time that this partnership exists.
“Fiocruz and the IOC have a long history of collaboration with Angola and Mozambique. In previous agreements signed for the training of human resources, more than 50 people were certified as masters or doctors”, said Carvalho in a released note.
