10 characteristics of the Brazilian parenting style that need to be changed

Parenting practices in Brazil are a reflection of the country's rich cultural mosaic, however, like any other culture, there are also aspects that need to be revisited. Identifying these areas is not an attack on culture, but a way to encourage reflection and growth.

Here, I highlight ten characteristics of the brazilian parenting style which I believe could be improved for a healthier and more balanced development of children.

  1. First, many Brazilian parents tend to be overprotective. While it's natural to want to protect your children, this can restrict their independence and coping skills. Children need to learn to make decisions, solve problems and deal with failures.
  2. Second, there is a prevalence of unquestionable authority. Many fathers and mothers place themselves as figures that cannot be questioned, not allowing an open dialogue with their children. This can generate a relationship based on fear rather than mutual respect.
  3. Third, it is common to reward children with treats or grant material desires as a form of love. This behavior can lead to future problems with eating and understanding the value of things.
  4. Fourth, there is a need to rethink the overemphasis on academic achievement. The pressure for good grades can generate anxiety and stress in children, in addition to overshadowing the importance of developing social and emotional skills.
  5. Fifth, the lack of consistency in applying limits and rules can confuse children, making it difficult for them to understand what is expected of them.
  6. The sixth characteristic is the tendency to compare children, whether with their siblings, friends or peers. Each child is unique and should be valued for their own abilities and achievements.
  7. The seventh issue is the frequent absence of open dialogue about sexuality. The silence surrounding this topic can leave young people uninformed and vulnerable.
  8. Eighth, there is the habit of not encouraging emotional expression in children, especially boys. This practice can hinder the development of healthy emotional skills.
  9. The ninth characteristic is the excessive delegation of children's education to the school. Parents have a crucial role in their children's educational and moral development, which cannot be fully replaced by the school.
  10. Finally, tenth, there is a tendency to impose life expectations on children rather than allowing them to explore their own passions and interests.

Of course, these characteristics are not universal for all Brazilian families and many parents are already adopting more up-to-date and conscious approaches. However, recognizing these trends can help initiate important dialogues and changes for the well-being of our children and society as a whole.

The evolution of parenting styles is an ongoing process, which must always be in line with human development and the promotion of respect and unconditional love.
