Instagram makes this action possible through the “limits” tool. Users can manage a large volume of interactions at once. This way, the app will hide comments and block direct messages (DMs) for a certain time.
All texts containing hateful content will be forwarded to a reserved folder. The measure is part of Instagram's actions to combat hate on the networks. Several content creators and users have reported cases of racism, prejudice and more.
Faced with constant criticism, the platform decided to take action and create the new feature. The company released a statement talking more about the matter:
“We developed this feature because we hear from creators and public figures that sometimes they go through sudden spikes in comments and requests for Direct messages, especially from people who don't know […]. In many cases, this is a show of support […]. But in some situations, this behavior can also be related to a high volume of negative comments or messages.”
In addition to the blocking tool, Instagram will also use Artificial Intelligence. The objective is to detect prejudiced comments and messages. The user will be informed about the content of the text he is publishing before publishing it.
Here’s how to enable the “Limits” feature:
To block DMs, follow the step by step:
- Open Instagram and go to the application settings;
- Enter the “Privacy” item;
- Select the “Limits” option;
- You can then temporarily limit unwanted comments and messages from accounts that don't follow you and/or recent followers;
