It may seem impossible to tell if a watermelon is really red and sweet on the inside because of its thick, hard skin. However, there are some details capable of revealing this information, you just need to know what they are and observe carefully.

How to choose watermelon?

1. Coloring of spots on the bark

Have you noticed that no watermelon is completely green? This is because a part of it grows in contact with the soil and this region is usually less pigmented. For this reason, this part is popularly known as “field stain”.

When this stain is more yellowish, it means that the fruit has remained in contact with the ground and has matured in the sun, therefore it is tastier. On the other hand, when this stain is very light, it indicates that the harvest was carried out with the watermelon still green and the fruit may not be as tasty.

2. thick stretch marks

Another important sign is the stretch marks that are in high relief on the watermelon rind. These marks mean that the bees were in contact with the fruit during the pollination process, so these scars indicate that the taste is more pleasant.

3. format and size

There are male and female fruits when it comes to watermelon. Curious, isn't it? The more elongated fruits are male and are generally more watery, while the female ones are smaller, more rounded and have a sweeter flavor.

4. dry stem

Like the melon, the sweetest watermelons are those with the driest end (stem), because it is an indication that the fruit is ripe. If the stem is green, it is probably not yet time to consume the watermelon pulp.

5. sounds

Finally, beat the watermelon carefully with your fingertips. If the emitted sound is “full”, it means that it is good for consumption and rich in juice. Also, check that the skin is soft, as this is a sign that the fruit is already very ripe.
