O McDonalds is one of the most recognized and successful fast food chains in the world. However, its history began in a modest way in San Bernardino, California, in 1940.

It was there that brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald opened a small hamburger restaurant, initially known as “McDonald’s Bar-B-Q”.

They introduced a streamlined menu with hamburgers, fries, and milkshakes, as well as a highly efficient food preparation system known as the "Speedee production system." It wasn't until 1954 that the history of McDonald's took a significant turn.

This year, a businessman named Ray Kroc, who was selling milkshake machines, visited the McDonald brothers' restaurant and was impressed by the efficiency and potential of the business. He saw an opportunity to take the McDonald brothers' concept to the rest of the country.

The beginning of McDonald's and the resemblance between the 80's and today

With an entrepreneurial vision and determination, Ray Kroc became the exclusive franchisee of the McDonald's brand in 1954. His goal was to expand the brand by opening franchises across the country.

On April 15, 1955, Kroc opened the first McDonald's franchise in Des Plaines, Illinois, marking the beginning of the company's national expansion.

Kroc's franchise quickly gained popularity, driven by the success of the efficient production system and consistent food quality. By 1958, McDonald's had already sold 100 million hamburgers, an impressive milestone for that time.

Over the years, McDonald's has continued to grow and innovate. The brand has adopted a unique design for its restaurants, highlighting the famous “golden arches”, which have become a globally recognized symbol.

A focus on speed of service, customer service and offering tasty, affordable food has contributed to the company's continued success.

Surprisingly, in the 80s, when the company was already established in the market, a franchise was similar to the stores we see today in urban centers.

The question that remains is: after so many years of evolution, are franchises changing or returning to old ideas?
