How to keep vegetables longer in the fridge
Step by step to keep the leaves and vegetables well preserved:
- Wash the vegetable under running water and discard any withered, yellowed or darkened leaves;
- Take a bowl, put water and sodium hypochlorite to let the vegetables submerge and soak for 10 minutes;
- Then rinse the leaves well and make sure they are very dry before storing them;
Note: To dry the leaves well, you can use the specific revolving container for drying vegetables, use a cloth or paper towel.
- If you have a lot of leaves, use storage bags, if not, you can use glass jars with airtight lids;
- Finally, store the vegetables in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator, as this is the coolest area and does not pose a risk of freezing.
Another tip is freezing!
- Separate the vegetables you want to freeze;
- Wash the items you want and peel, cut or remove the stems and spoiled parts, according to the needs of the food;
- Blanching the vegetables to extend the shelf life of the food, called blanching (soak the food in a pot of boiling water for about two minutes);
- Then remove them and immediately take them to a bowl of cold water or pass them under running water;
- Afterwards, dry a lot to avoid the accumulation of water when it freezes;
- Finally, store the vegetables in a glass or plastic container with a lid or in a plastic bag (hermetically sealed) and place in the freezer.
Note: The important thing is to remove as much air as possible from the packaging when closing. Also, it's good to know that, in general, vegetables can be kept frozen for up to six months.
