Earlier this year, a team of scientists identified two new varieties of fruit, originating from fruit trees that until then were unknown.
These are the pitanga uvaia, which can be harvested from Eugenia delicata, and the Niterói yellow cherry, which is the fruit of Eugenia superba. Both the fruits and the trees were named by the researchers who made the discoveries.

Those responsible for the important discoveries are part of a group of researchers from the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) and the Botanical Garden of Rio.
The scientists located the plants in the Serra da Tiririca State Park, in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, within the municipal territory of the cities of Maricá and Niterói.
According to a publication by the Kew Bulletin, a scientific journal specializing in botany, the new trees can reach 15 meters in height and are threatened with extinction.
The journal also informs that only 6 specimens of Eugenia delicata and 3 of Eugenia superba were found in the park.
In addition, it should be noted that the delicata has a firmer appearance and has small leaves, while the superba has thin leaves and a more slender trunk that splinters and crumbles when touched.
The Inea (State Institute for the Environment) of Rio de Janeiro also analyzed the discoveries and issued some verdicts on them.
“Both newly discovered species produce ornamental flowers and edible fruits both for us and for the local fauna”, said the entity in a note.
