Activity 3: Reading wheel

The teacher selects a variety of texts (stories, poems) appropriate to the age group of his students and, in addition, that arouse their interest. If the text is large, the reading wheel can be done in more than one session.

Everyone sits in a circle, if possible, outside the classroom. The teacher should try to create a pleasant environment, for example on grass, on colored rugs, in the shade of a tree, using cushions, etc.

The reading can be done by the teacher, by a selected student or by several students (each one with a part) and previously prepared so that the reading is done with enthusiasm, intonation and punctuation suitable. The teacher should research about the author and present this information to the students.

After reading, students need to be encouraged to ask questions and talk about the book. This is not a reading comprehension activity, but the teacher may have some questions that encourage conversation.

Finally, the teacher needs to be aware of student participation and encourage everyone to participate.

Text suggestion: The Right of Children, by Ruth Rocha

every child in the world
must be well protected
Against the rigors of time
Against the rigors of life.

Child has to have a name
Child has to have a home
Be healthy and not hungry
Be safe and study.

It's not a matter of wanting
No question of agreeing
Children's rights
Everyone has to respect.

You are entitled to attention
Right not to be afraid
Right to books and bread
Right to have toys.

But children also have
The right to smile.
Run by the sea,
Having coloring pencils...

See a shooting star,
Movie that has a robot,
Win a beautiful gift,
Listen to grandfather's stories.

Get off the slide,
make soap bubble,
Ice cream, if it's hot,
Play guessing.

Strawberry with Chantilly,
See magician in top hat,
The song of I saw you,
Ball, ball, ball, ball!

Lick the bottom of the pan
be treated with affection
Be cheerful and chatty
Might as well say no!

Cart, games, dolls
Assemble a set-up game,
hopscotch, shuttlecocks,
And a skipping rope.

A canoe ride,
honey-smeared bread,
Hang around for a bit...
Counting stars in the sky...

keep reading magazine,
a smart friend
Kite at the end of the line,
A good hot dog.

celebrate birthday,
With bullet, cake and balloon!
Play with many friends,
Jump on the mattress.

Books with a lot of pictures,
travel by train,
A little adventure...
Someone to wish well...

Feast of Saint John,
With bonfire and firecracker,
Pé-de-moleque and rojão,
With gang and flag.

Walking under the rain,
Listening to music and dancing.
See sauva career,
Smell the sea.

Stepping barefoot in the mud,
Eating fruits in the orchard,
See house of john-de-barro,
Very moonlit night.

Have time to do nothing
Having someone comb your hair,
Keep quiet for a while...
Talk nineteen to the dozen.

And when night comes,
A nice, warm bath
Feeling of well-being...
Preferably a collar.

A soft walk,
A lullaby,
A very beautiful story,
So sleep and dream...

Though I am not king,
Decree, in this country,
that every, every child
You have the right to be happy!!!

Questions that can be asked to motivate the conversation:

  1. What is the theme of the poem?
  2. What are the rights of children mentioned in the poem?
  3. Why do children need to be happy?
  4. Are children's rights important? Why?
