Meaning of Observation (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Note is the act of observing, this means having the attention directed to something specific, with the intention of later judging, analyzing or investigating a certain thing or someone.

When a person makes an observation, it means that he has developed a comment, usually critical, about something he witnessed. In this case, observations tend to point out the most positive and negative aspects of the observed object in question.

In Portuguese, the word "observation" is usually abbreviated as note:, being that the use of the colon is mandatory when there is the elucidation of something to follow.

Example: "Note: in Brazil, voting is mandatory".

In the scientific field, observation is part of the scientific method, consisting solely of observing and perceiving the target object.

From this point of view, there are different types of observations that can be applied by a researcher:

Unstructured observation (unsystematic): researcher as a mere spectator, observing a certain situation without planning what will happen.

Structured observation: A thorough preparation is made, describing information about the object you observe and that would be of interest to you.

The observation can also be non-participant (passive), without any kind of interference on the part of the researcher; or participant (active), when the researcher has a position and is directly involved in the observed situation.
