Cyclone in RS: know what the phenomenon is

One extratropical cyclone reached the southern region of Brazil on Thursday (15) and continues this Friday (16).

The phenomenon caused heavy rainfall with more than 200 millimeters in some cities.

One of the cities affected is São Leopoldo, in Rio Grande do Sul, 50 km from Porto Alegre. The governor of the state, Eduardo Leite, confirmed in a social network transmission a death by electric shock. In this municipality, an accumulation of 195.4 mm of rain was recorded.

What is cyclone?

According to the United States Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a cyclone is characterized by a rotating system of rains and storms that forms in tropical or subtropical waters.

The type that passes through the south of the country is the extratropical one. It forms in middle and high latitudes, that is, outside the tropics and associated with cold fronts. Its shape is like a spiral and its center has a low temperature compared to the neighboring atmosphere, according to information from this article.
