Artificial intelligence is the technology capable of building computers and machines that make autonomous decisions based on a type of intelligence that mimics that of human beings.
Artificial intelligence is commonly abbreviated to AI or AI (artificial intelligence, in the English translation).
The filters used in social networks, virtual assistants and cleaning assistants, such as robot vacuum cleaners, are examples of devices that use artificial intelligence.
How artificial intelligence works
AI is the science responsible for developing machines and computer programs capable of thinking and reacting rationally. By being programmed to perform a function, these computers are able to perform it efficiently and don't need supervision. They can also detect, solve problems and make decisions.
Algorithms are used to program functions or make them machines learn from information contained in a database. Algorithms are nothing more than a sequence of information that drives the performance of the software.
Machine learning can be divided into two subcategories: Machine Learning (machine learning) and Deep Learning (deep learning or unsupervised machine learning).
The difference between the subcategories is explained by how the algorithm is set to learn. In Machine Learning, machines can learn from structured data, which has already been supervised by humans.
In Deep Learning, machines can learn from data that is not structured, that is, based on random data, that have not yet been organized or contextualized, such as loose texts available online, images or sounds.
Deep machine learning (Deep Learning) is a significant advancement of AI, because it allows to reduce, even more, the need for human interference. Machines and computers programmed with this type of learning use neural networks, which are inspired by the human way of thinking.
This makes it possible for a machine to perform tasks previously considered exclusive to human intelligence, such as creating images and texts or driving cars.
Artist Jason Allen's "Théâtre D'opéra Spatial," for example, was created by AI and won the Colorado State Fair Arts Competition.
Examples of artificial intelligence
AI is already part of everyday life for ordinary people. Much of the technology that is used in social networks, streaming services or cleaning the house are considered types of artificial intelligence.
Technology is improved every day and, little by little, is introduced into the consumer market. Here are some examples of artificial intelligence that are already popular around the world:
Social media filters
The filters used mainly in videos and photos, capable of detecting human faces (and some animals) and replacing them with masks or funny illustrations are types of AI.
Stock replenishing robots in supermarkets and stores
There are already robots capable of circulating between stocks and products displayed in supermarkets, making the checking which products need to be replaced or replaced and whether there are price tags wrong. Some of these robots even replace products.
Cleaning assistants: robot vacuum cleaners
Cleaning assistants, also called robot vacuum cleaners, are part of devices managed by artificial intelligence. These are products capable of vacuuming environments by themselves, mapping the locations of the house, detecting and avoiding objects or stairs, as well as returning to the charging base by themselves.
virtual assistants
They are assistants who use artificial intelligence to perform the most varied functions, such as turning on or off sound systems, lights and sockets, making calls. Or start operating other appliances connected to the internet (internet of things), such as kitchen robots, cleaning robots, among others.
Virtual assistants can also answer questions, provide information and tell jokes.
Video, image and sound recognition and cataloging tools
They are tools capable of recognizing places, faces, music and sounds in videos, photos and music. This type of tool has multiple functions, among them is the recognition of people in surveillance cameras.
Video recommendation tools
It is a tool that is widely used on platforms such as Youtube or streaming services. AI is able to identify a pattern of tastes and consumption, and recommend channels, movies and series that will be the user's preference.
Text and image creation and editing tools
They are tools capable of creating images and texts. Based on online information, the tool can create new content that can follow specific styles. For example, texts in journalistic style or images in the style of a certain artist.
autonomous cars
They are not yet widely available, but AI aims to create truly autonomous cars without the need for a driver. With AI, cars would be smart and all connected, preventing accidents or removing the need for traffic lights.
