O National School Sports Day (May 25) it is the date that reinforces the importance of practicing sports in the school environment as a tool for developing different skills, abilities and social factors of children and young people.
On that date, several actions, campaigns and events are promoted in Brazilian schools in order to promote debates about the educational role of sports activities.

Origin of National School Sports Day
National School Sports Day or National School Sports Day is celebrated on May 25 due to the founding of the Brazilian Confederation of School Sports (CBDE). The date was made official in 2023 through Law No. 14,579.
A CBDE was created in 2000 and is part of the National Sports System in Brazil. It is the responsibility of the institution to administer sport in the educational field, in basic, fundamental and secondary education. The agency's mission is to enable the promotion of sports in an integral way, the exercise of citizenship and the practice of leisure based on sport.
What is school sport and why is it important?
School sport is the practice of sporting experiences in the school environment for educational purposes. According to the Ministry of Sport, sport pedagogy seeks to reflect the sports modalities as educational and citizenship training actions.
The educational actions promoted through sport in the school context involve interventions with aspects defined, such as commitment, responsibility, organization, intentionality and responsibility educational.

Among the functions developed by school sports are playfulness, cooperation, companionship and entertainment. In this sense, competitiveness and training, characteristic of sports, are left aside in order to pay attention to the educational aspects that exist in sports.
A practice of sports in schools provides opportunities for social interaction, respect for the rules, as well as for teammates and opponents. These activities provoke situations of conquests or defeats, therefore, possibilities of exercising cooperation, ethics and friendship.

History of School Physical Education in Brazil
Physical Education School arrived in Brazil around the 18th and 19th centuries. During this period, the area was based on the medical-hygienist perspective. The aim of the discipline's classes was to achieve strong and hygienic bodies.
Initially, the discipline suffered an intense military influence. The intention was to prepare the corps for possible military conflicts. The ideal was one of patriotism and nationalism. The content of Physical Education at that time was based on European models of gymnastics.
After the end of World War II and the Estado Novo in Brazil, new pedagogical trends in Physical Education began to emerge.

During the Military Dictatorship in Brazil, there was a process of expansion of sports in school environments with the objective of seeking results in international competitions. The main objectives were physical fitness and identification of sporting talents.
Then, other teaching possibilities in Physical Education emerged.. These perspectives began to understand the body culture dimension of the movement and to promote critical and reflective thoughts about body practice in the school environment.
