O Palace of Jaburu, in Brasilia, DF, is the official residence of the vice president of the republic. It was only designed in 1973, that is, 13 years after the inauguration of the federal capital and most of the other buildings in the planned city. Even so, it also featured the architecture of Oscar Niemeyer and integrates with the urbanism of Lúcio Costa. In addition, big names, such as Burle Marx in the gardens, Marianne Peretti in the stained glass windows and Athos Bulcão in the works of art, make up the enormous palace by the lake of the same name.

The Jaburu Palace is the official residence of the Vice President of the Republic. Its name refers to the lake next to it. Like several official buildings in Brasilia, the building was designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer.

History of the Palace of Jaburu

Unlike buildings like the Alvorada Palace (official residence of president and also where his office is), the Palácio do Jaburu is only intended to house the deputy. It was not ready at the same time as the others, that is, during the foundation of Brasília (1960) or close years, but 17 years later, in 1977, and the project wasstarted in 1973.

Its name is due to the lake that is next to it., also called Jaburu. The palace is listed as cultural heritage by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan).

Architecture and features of the Jaburu Palace

The Jaburu Palace maintains the modernist characteristics of Niemeyer's architecture and harmoniously integrates the landscaping by Lúcio Costa. Natural species of the thick in the flora that make up the gardens of the palace on the edge of Lake Jaburu.

Due to the slight distance from the city and all this favorable environment, in addition to having rheas, which also inhabit the Planalto Palace, Jaburu ended up becoming a natural nursery for several species of birds.

Vice presidents who have lived in the Jaburu Palace

As soon as inaugurated, the Jaburu Palace was inhabited by Adalberto Pereira dos Santos, vice of Geisel, president at the time. After him we had:

  • Aureliano Chaves, vice of Joao Figueiredo;

  • Jose Sarney, when vice of Tancredo, before moving to Alvorada;

  • Itamar Franco, when vice of Collor, before becoming president and also moving to Alvorada;

  • Marco Maciel, vice of Fernando Henrique Cardoso;

  • José Alencar, vice of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva;

  • Michel Temer, vice of Dilma Rousseff (and after the Impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff, he even moved to Alvorada, but shortly afterwards, he preferred to continue living in Jaburu);

  • Hamilton Mourao, vice of Jair Bolsonaro;

  • Geraldo Alckmin, deputy of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
