What are ordinal numbers (first, second, third...)

Ordinal numbers indicate the position that an element occupies in a series, order or hierarchy. Examples of ordinal numbers are: first (1st), second (2nd), third (3rd), eleventh (11th), twentieth (20th), thirtieth (30th), fortieth (40th), fiftieth (50th), seventieth (70th) and eighty-fourth (84.º).

Ex. 1: "My socks are in the Monday drawer". Ex. 2: "she is in octave week of gestation". Ex. 3: "The team won its ninth state title".

Ordinal numbers, also called ordinal numbers, can be represented in full (first, fifteenth and fifty-eighth), in Arabic numerals (1st, 15th, 58th) or in Roman numerals (Ex.: Pope John Paul II, IV Festival de Winter). In the case of representation by Arabic numerals, the number must always be followed by a dot (.) and the ordinal indicator, which can be masculine (º) or feminine (ª).

Ordinal numbers are part of a grammatical class called numeral. In addition to the ordinal numbers, there are the numbers cardinals (one, two, ten, fifty etc), the multiplicatives (double, triple, sixfold, eightfold, etc.), the fractional (one third, two fifths, one eighth, twelfth etc.) and the collectives (dozen, quarantine, ten, semester etc).

Unlike ordinal numbers, which indicate the position of an element in a series, the Cardinal numbers are those that name or indicate a precise amount of something. Ex. 1: "There is 25 students in the classroom". Ex. 2: "I have nine pens in the case". Ex. 3: "I want six buns, please".
